My Exposure Box

Back to electronics: It was my desire to own a exposure box for making PCB, but time always prevented me in doing so. Now that I have my full time making things I decided to make one. I am supposed to make a wood box but my skill in carpentry is quite zero, so I went to our small stock room hoping to find a suitable ready made box. Surprisingly I spotted our old A4 Flat bed scanner which is just lying full of dust.... and here my exposure box was born.

My old WinScan A4 Tech scanner.

5 pcs. Omni T5 Ultra slim Fluorescent with Electronic Ballast - PH199.75

Positioning the lamp

I decided to put 1mm aluminum plate to level the lamp casing

I want all things easy so a 3M double adhesive was use

Fixing the wiring with the supplied plugs

the good thing is... the socket are in both end of the fluorescent holder

Powering up

The finish box

Next will be the Pic base timer

Hydroponics My New Hobby

What is hydroponics?

Hydroponics is the growing of plants without any soil. Plants require three things to survive – Light, Oxygen and Nutrients. Since soil is the normal source of nutrients for plants, when removed we need to replace it with something else. This is usually done by adding nutrients to the plants water source.

What do I need for hydroponics?

There are many different systems you can buy or build for hydroponics. Unfortunately, as with most things in the Philippines, your choices will be limited.. so be prepared to go the DIY route.
The systems generally all work along the same principles. You have your seed or plant which is held in place by an inert growth medium (e.g Rock Wool). The usual methods of supplying the plant with nutrients when growing hydroponically are:
1) Have the roots sitting in a mix of water/nutrients
2) Spray the roots with a water/nutrient mix
3) Drip feed a mix of water/nutrients

Some people take this a step further and use a cheap air pump and air stone to aerate the water which provides more oxygen to the roots and further helps the plants growth.

Balete My Second Home

From Batanggenyong Online

Balete is basically an agricultural municipality. Of the 2,053 hectares land area, 1,980 hectares is devoted to agriculture. Other major crops are citrus, cassava, mango, banana, black pepper, camote, vegetables and other kinds of fruit bearing trees that are intercropped with coconuts.

The town lies northwest of Lipa City . It was bounded on the south by the Municipality of Mataas na Kahoy, on the west by the Taal Lake , on the North by the Municipality of Tanauan and on the East by the Municipality of Malvar . The town is approximately 93 kilometers from Manila and 44 kilometers from Batangas City .

The highest portion of the town is about 100-200 feet above sea level. It has slope about 40%-60%. A big portion of taal lake is situates within its jurisdiction. It has three tributary namely: Palsara river, Magapi river and Sampalocan River.

Balete was a former barrio of the City of Lipa . Based on the stories handed by old folks, Balete trees were very abundant in this place during the early days when there were still settlers therein. As time goes by, the place came to be known as Balete.

The first residents of Balete were Jose Magapi & his family. After the eruption of Taal Volcano in 1911, the well-known real state property owner of Looc, Balete were brothers Venancio & Ricardo Macasaet. Also famous honored and obeyed during that time was Pablo Maralit who resided in Barrio Makina.

On June 21, 1969 the congress enacted Republic Act No. 5659 creating Balete into a municipality with 13 barangays comprising namely: alangilan, Calawit, Looc, San Sebastian , Solis, Makina, Sala, Sampalocan, Magapi, Malabanan, Paligawan, Palsara & Poblacion.

The 2003 population of Balete is 17,168 or 3,256 household. With an annual growth rate of 4.25%. The average household size is 5.05. the most populated barangays are Brgys. Malabanan, Poblacion and Magapi. While the least populated are Brgy. Alangilan, Solis and San Sebastian .

Balete is a natural tourism site. It is endowed with a vast area of natural beauty and recreational value. Boat cruises along taal lake present to tourist a scenic and breath-taking view of mountain hills and azure water, whose calmness is totally inviting. An hour boat ride can bring tourists to the volcano island where they start their trek to the famous taal volcano and savor nature in all its undaunted grandeur.

Another attraction is the Balete beach with its fresh water is certainly recommendable for tourism development. Boating, swimming and fishing will surely provide tourists enjoyable times in most areas of the beach.

Developed beach resorts which offer the solemnity for retreats and prayer and this can be found in Brgy. Malabanan. While Marian Orchard offers the solemnity for retreats and prayer also found in brgy. Malabanan.

My New Dinosaur

The newest member of the family...bagong sasakyan, katas ng pagod at libag hehe. The Crosswind, despite being basically the same since its introduction 10 years ago, still offers some key value propositions to prospective buyers. Ang isa sa kinukunsidera ko pag bibili ng bagong sasakyan ay diesel. My wife and I considered the Crosswind or the D4D Innova. Parehong 7-seaters, one of my main criteria. I studied my options for more than 2 months reading forums and story and experiences of Crosswind owners regarding these 2
vehicles.

Eventually, I decided on the Crosswind Sportivo because it was essentially an old-school, straight-to-the-point vehicle. Call it a dinosaur if you wish but it was exactly being a dinosaur that made me choose it over the Innova:

1. It has a proven diesel engine that mechanics outside the Casa can service (unlike the CRDI where only the Casa has the expertise to service)
2. Its parts are widely available and are cheaper to replace than the CRDI
3. It can take in any quality of diesel fuel you put on it.
4. No ECU to worry about in case I encounter some flooded streets
5. Owners' testimonies of 250K mileage with relatively few parts replacements
6. The indestructible-bullet-proof-built-like-a-tank proven reputation of Isuzu vehicles.

The Crosswind answered my need for a diesel-fed, "keeper" vehicle which I can use for 10-15 years as my workhorse without worrying too much about parts availability. I can drive it around anywhere without worrying about diesel quality and I can easily find a neigborhood mechanic to service it. Things like styling or horsepower or acceleretion speed were not factors in my purchase decision.
My point is kahit mukhang "overpriced" ang Crosswind (dahil luma na nga ang specs nito) vs. the Innova or the Montero, meron at meron pa rin bibili nito kahit pa hindi palitan ang specs nito for the next 10 years. And the reason for that ay meron talagang solid value proposition ang Crosswind for a certain segment of buyers.

Pic Hobby

Ok ito naman ang hobby ko... palipas oras. My first ever programmer is PicAll by Bojan of Slovakia. I was then using assembly language. Medyo madugo kaya naisipang kung lumipat sa Let PicBasic compiler.. then to PicBasic Pro, PicBasic Plus up to Proton Development Suit. Tapos naisipan kung gumawa ng EpicPlus programmer which I really like dahil kunti lang ang hazzle lalo na sa setup ng mga fuses. Gumawa ako ng sarili kong version kasama na ang zero zip socket. Next time post ko pics. Syanga pala meron din akong original PicKit2 programmer ng Microchip.
